Selecting The Perfect Plate Rack

The humble plate rack maybe becoming a kitchen container of the past, particularly since then invention of the dishwasher.  However how many of us still yearn for a good plate rack / dish drainer when you just need to tidy those few dirty plates away and can’t bring yourself to put the dishwasher on for those two plates and couple of mugs.

Safe Storage is Everything

Not only are they a useful draining board accompaniment but I believe an essential where it comes to storing those kitchen plates safely. How many of us have huge tall stacks of plates in our kitchen cupboards. Normally the largest and heaviest plates at the bottom and reducing in diameter as the pile mounts up. These plate stacks at times can make the Leaning Tower of Pisa look perpendicular and safe. I am sure we have all had the occasion when either trying to slip a large plate at the bottom of the pile or removing that medium size plate half way down the pile of plates has wobbled and even snapped back in protest by trapping your thumb. This can leave you in no doubt that the perfect plate rack would have saved your agony.

Vertical or Horizontal

There are two main choices when selecting a plate. Either vertical or horizontal and both probably depend on the number of plates you wish to store in your kitchen and the space available. Vertical plate racks can aesthetically look the best and are often built into the kitchen design or wall mounted. Using such a wall mounted plate rack is a great way to save worktop space. Although probably not the most space efficient theses can be the easiest to use as no stacking is necessary. Horizontal plate racks are normally angled for easy access and some designed specifically for certain diameter plates and can fit neatly into a corner.

Your Material Choices

When selecting your plate rack the choices of material are various but some of the common used material are wood, metal or plastic. However which ever rack you choose it can only add to your kitchen storage.

Best Kitchen Storage Canisters for Preserving

So you have grown your own vegetables and the weather has been kind. This years bumper crop of for example onions, is filling your kitchen and you don’t know what to do with it all. Well apart from giving them away to all your friends or selling them on the street you want to store them in a way to preserve them so you can have for example pickled onions  or chutney all year round.

Now most preserving jars are that you end up storing in the kitchen cupboard are made of glass the main reason being so you can see what is being stored. Not only this aesthetically they look beautiful full of that produce you have lovely placed inside them. So most of us will select a kitchen storage canister made from glass but that is only the first step in selecting the best jar.

The next and possibly the most important choice is the type of lid. The old fashion metal lever-arm sealing mechanism with rubber sealing ring may cost a little more than the more modern screw lid, I personally think it is worth it for some of your treasured pickles. The ease you can open and reseal is a definite advantage over the precarious opening of a screw top lid. How many of us can remember the fear of trying to open that over tightened jam jar lid with a knife which health and safety officers would have nightmares about.

Size matters

Finally choosing the right size kitchen canisters for the job in hand. Now most are round but you must ensure they have a bigger enough opening or neck of the jar to be able to get your produce in. The volume of the jar is also essential as once opened depending on the produce there is a life expectancy and you must ensure the total jars contents is likely to be consumed before the contents becomes inedible.

So now you have the perfect storage canister for preserving placed in your kitchen cupboard just waiting to be opened. Select your favourite plate from your plate rack put a spoonful of chutney with a a slice of cheese on top of  that slice of freshly home made bread. What a perfect late night snack.

So you have laid your best cutlery out, the table cloth has been ironed, the napkins are on the table and the diner is in the oven. There is nothing like killing the atmosphere than a budget plastic water bottle on the table. That’s where the stylish water jug can make a table complete and ensure your guest has a great thirst free evening.

Water jugs go back in history and the famous Water Jugs of Cana is the name given to the jars Jesus used to perform his first miracle in the Book of John. Although not all water jugs are that significant they are a staple container found in most peoples kitchens today. Be it serving water or that home made lemonade with freshly sliced fruit floating in it for your barbeque they have a few essential requirements.

It needs to be a vessel that holds liquid with a handle and a spout to pour from. The first jugs were made from clay but the more common water jugs today are made from glass or plastic. The plastic water jugs have the advantage of being light and unlike the glass water jugs are not likely to break. They come in various sizes from large two handle kitchen canisters to small whisky water jugs. When selecting you jug don’t forget where you are going to store it to ensure it fits the kitchen cupboard or fridge shelf. Personally there is nothing better than a cool glass of water on a summers day being poured from a classic glass water jug.

In recent years the water filter jug has become more popular. People trying to be more ecologically friendly and cost conscious by not buying bottled water and using water filter jugs to filter the tap water and remove the impurities to give that bottle water taste.

Storage Jars to save your cookies

There is nothing worse than a stale biscuit or when you open that kitchen cupboard to find pasta or sugar spread across your cupboard. It is not only wasteful but close to a disaster when sitting down in front of the television with cup of tea to watch the latest episode of the Great British bake off. So all good kitchens should have a plentiful supply of storage jars, but must ensure you buy the right kitchen canisters for the ingredients or produce you are going to store.

There are a few options when selecting a storage jar and not all have to be related to kitchens. In fact I am sure most garages today have at least one jam jar in the garage that they store various size nails and screws we all seem to end up with. Hopefully not left over from your latest DIY assembly flat pack. That brings us neatly back to that  kitchen cupboard and those kitchen storage canisters.

Selecting the Right Storage Jars

When selecting a storage container you should not only select the right size of jar for what you are going to store but also the right material. You must take into account if you need to display what is in the jar and ensure the lid has a seal on it to ensure a vacuum seal. For example sweet jars in shop not only have to be bigger enough to store a good quantity of your favourite gob stoppers but also have an air tight seal that is easily accessible. The other factor many of us forget is the size of storage jar and the space it is going to be kept. How many of us have felt a sinking feeling as we try to put that extra large olive oil (that was on offer in the supermarket) in the cupboard to only find out it doesn’t fit.

So you know the size and what you want to store in the jar your next decision is material and style. So much of this will depend on budget. If you are looking at the lower end of the budget scale you will probably be looking at plastic clip lid container and I am sure most modern day kitchens today will have some form of these. However for a few more dollars, pounds or euro’s you can get a storage jar set made from anything from china to brushed metal.
